What I'm Passionate About
Nature ~ Yoga ~ Love ~ Community ~ Spirituality ~ Music
Hi, I'm Adam. Welcome to my little corner of the Internet!
I'm a community psychologist.
What does that mean? I live in and actively engage with my surrounding community at the individual and systemic levels. Community psychologists integrate social, cultural, economic, political, and environmental influences to promote positive change, health, and empowerment.
I'm 38 years old and a resident of NW Philadelphia. Since I was a teenager, I've been dedicated to the direct service of others. I've had the privilege of working with people of all ages for 25 years, including 17 years as a therapist.
I am Jewish, more spiritual than religious. Judaism is a big part of my identity and responsible for why I value community. I am second-generation, one of the few people from my extended family even born in the US. I have roots in or ties to Ukraine, Israel, Eastern Europe (Romania and Austria) and South America (Brazil).
As a licensed psychologist, I speak from experience and try to lead by example. I believe in and practice the lifestyle of growth and health that I advocate to my clients. I'm not perfect, nor do I expect you to be. I know what it's like to be the client (in individual or couples therapy). It can be hard to open up to someone about who you are and what you struggle with; to be truly vulnerable with your innermost thoughts and feelings for fear of judgment or rejection.
I invest in my local community--playing music with neighbors, using and encouraging neighbors to use Fernhill Park, our neighborhood park. I'm at the park daily, walking, riding my bike, playing basketball, or in the Food Forest. When I'm not working, you might also find me hiking in the Wissachickon Valley Park, AKA "The Wissahickon," playing music, spending time with family, or doing silly impressions (like Sting singing "Someday" by The Strokes)
There is so much potential in our communities. Thanks to our modern technologies, there are so many ways to connect with people and things that are far from us. The most immersive, meaningful -- and frankly, the simplest -- experiences come with connections to ourselves, to nature, and to our local neighbors.
I believe in strengthening local communities and reinvigorating their autonomy and sustainability through grassroots movements. It is a basic human right to have access to clean water and fresh, nutritious food. I'm proud to be part of an organization that helps play a crucial role in shaping that reality. As a working member, I volunteer to support my local food co-op, Weaver's Way. Founded in 1973, the co-op is driven to provide access to healthy, local, and fresh foods. It is steadily growing, with 4 locations and serving over 15,000 member households across Northwest Philadelphia and Ambler.
